Industrial Training Institute, Jammu got established in 1958. This college is centrally located with a distance of 5 km from the University of Jammu and 3 km from the heart of Jammu city i.e. Jewel Chowk. Institute Campus is constructed in 40 kanals of land with 42000 sq.ft constructed area. The institute is well equipped with latest techniques and making all efforts to bridge the industry institute gaps.
The Directorate of Skill Development (Technical Education) was established in the year 1981 by the creation of a unified body for the administration and control of the Institutions imparting Technical/ Vocational Trainings in then State. The integration was felt necessary to co-ordinate the related training activities from time to time and to affect more efficient utilization of the mutual resources for the overall development of the training scenario in the JK.
With a huge population to be cared for, the architects of the national economy saw the solution to the un-employment and for the raising of economic conditions, development of the nation by the way of increasing skilled manpower and a healthy industrial institute linkage. For the purpose boost was given to ITIs including by way of public private partnership modes etc.
The Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS) was introduced by the Government of India in 1950 to ensure a steady flow of skilled workers in different trades for the domestic industry, to raise quantitatively and qualitatively the industrial production by systematic training, to reduce unemployment among the educated youth by providing them employable training, to cultivate and nurture a technical/ industrial attitude in the minds of the younger generation.
There has been a steady growth of Craftsman Training facilities in J&K ever since the first introduction over four decades back. The growth has been qualitative, as obsolete Trades are being replaced by new, modern and job-oriented Trades. Quantitatively, the number of training centers has been constantly increasing and at present there are 52 Industrial Training Institutes..
Under the dynamic leadership of Worthy Principal Secretary to Govt. Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon, IAS now the Technical Education Department is re-designated as Skill Development Department in 2020 to cover all the possibility for upgrading skills which is the need of the hour.
The Craftsmen Training Scheme is conducted by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) all over the country and as SCVT at State / UT level. On completion of the training, the All India Trade Test (AITT) is conducted by the NCVT/SCVT leading to the award of National Trade Certificate (NTC)/ State Trade Certificate (STC) on the successful qualification of the AITT / Trade test by Board of Technical Education, JK. The skill certificates open wide doors of employment for skilled man power mainly in private sector and also in Govt. Sector. These skill certificates help for earning livelihood within the UT, Country including abroad.
Apart from these, the Institute is actively participating in Short Term Courses , Placements, NCC, Awareness camps and other for the overall development of trainees so that they can earn livelihood by way of self employment, with some entrepreneur or by way of forming self help groups etc.
